STEM Summer Institute: Underwater Robotics

About the Camp:
The STEM Summer Institute is a week-long summer educational program for talented high school students (AGES 16-18) who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields. Students who participate in this program will spend one week on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi building knowledge in underwater robotics, interacting with other talented teens, and learning from experienced university professors. The program includes hands-on activities, guest speakers, and first hand experience in our engineering laboratories.
This year we plan to have an on-site interview with OET E/V Nautilus in action underwater. Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus is a 64-meter research vessel. It is operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. Nautilus is equipped with the remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) Hercules, Argus, Diana, and Echo, which are owned and operated by the Institute for Exploration. It has a high-bandwidth satellite system on board to facilitate remote science and education via the Inner Space Center (ISC) at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, which shares a live feed from the ROVs with Exploration Command Consoles located around the world. This year the live broadcasting with Nautilus is coming to TAMUCC for conversation with crew members on the ship at sea and our participants can ask them questions directly.
Summer Institute students live in university housing during their stay on campus. There is a $35 non-refundable application fee. The cost of the camp is $500. This covers the costs of food, lodging, and instructional materials. Scholarships may be available for participants who express need based on merit or financial need. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is a unique campus, in that it is located on its own private island, just minutes away from miles of Gulf Coast beaches. With palm trees lining the pathways throughout the 240-acre campus, the nearby natural wetlands, and the beach along Ocean Drive, TAMUCC is a great environment for living and learning. The campus is located at 6300 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78412.
Campers will be housed on the TAMUCC campus in residence halls which offer spectacular bay views. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available in the dorms. Campers will need to bring their own linens, pillow, and detergent.
Arrival and Departure:
Parents (or students) are responsible for transportation to and from TAMUCC at the beginning and end of camp. A $35 non-refundable application fee must be paid through the TAMUCC Marketplace (Visa or MasterCard only) in order to process the application. Students will be notified of their acceptance after the selection committee reviews all applications and can then secure their space with a $250 deposit also paid through the TAMUCC Market place by Visa or MasterCard only. The remaining balance is due by May 23, 2016 on the TAMUCC Marketplace. Capacity is expected to be reached before the application deadline. Students are accepted on a first come, first serve basis upon review of their application.
Meals will be provided for all campers, and are included in the tuition price.

Personal Statement (400 word minimum): Addresses the questions identified in the application, is typed in 12 pt. font, double-spaced and submitted with the camp application.
Medical Emergency Information/Consent for Treatment form MUST be completed, signed by a parent or legal guardian, and submitted with the camp application.
Waiver, Indemnification, and Medical Treatment Authorization form MUST be completed, signed by a parent or legal guardian, and submitted with the camp application.
A copy (front and back) of the student’s medical insurance card must be submitted with the camp application.
Parental Authorization and Request Form for Student Pickup/Drop Off should be submitted on or before the start of the camp only if a student needs to leave the camp at any time after registration and before the end of camp.
A $250 deposit to secure your space is required once you have been selected and must be paid through the TAMUCC Marketplace (Visa or MasterCard only) in order to process the application.
